This is the way.
Lot on at work this week. I have been trying to not let it overwhelm me (as I do normally). Exercise, family time, sleep (to a degree) are sacred now. Regardless of how much is going on.
This new mindset is hard.
7:45pm.
Lost my patience.
Just ran out of steam.
Just annoying.
So close to making it.
The feeling comes so fast and I cannot control it
I’m on fire, but I’m trying not to show it
As it picks me up, puts me down
It picks me up, puts me down
Picks me up, it puts me down
A hundred times a day
But I hear the music, I feel the beat
And for a moment, when I’m dancing, I am free
- When you meet with opposition, even if it should be from your husband or your children, endeavor to overcome it by argument and not by authority, for a victory dependent upon authority is unreal and illusory.

A night away with Lyra feels like turning myself off and on again.
The best bit about hotels is always how little stuff I have when I’m in them.
Rewatching Ted Lasso with Lyra. So good to see it a second time around and to watch it again it’s someone who hasn’t seen it before.
Night away with Lyra. This is me just sitting and not having to have half an eye, ear or mind on the kids.
Our 3 HomePods are all an hour fast. No idea why. No idea how to rectify it. Which is great.
Grateful to @patrickrhone for writing this post about friendship because it has spurred me to arrange to meet some friends online.
I struggle because of distance, as well China’s current travel restrictions, which limits options a little. But also because I find calling difficult. Where calling feels like a synonym for video calling now. Which is a change from when I was young. Difficult because, despite being so connected by messaging apps and social media, calling feels intrusive and ironcially lacks connection. Plus, you don’t really do it without an appointment, right? Except mum, obviously.
Like I said, I’m thinking a lot about this and plan to make a concerted effort to not only prioritize my friendships but to make thinking about them as an option a habit. To be intentional about giving time to the people I love.
Yeah, I’m going to make an effort to do this too.
Top tip! Want some time alone at the weekend?
It’s easy, get up at 5am. Then when the kids wake at 6:15, you’ve had over an hour to yourself!
Wide awake at 5am on the weekend.

Forty and one day.
Sidecar is great. It just worked.
Now I need something to hold up my iPad. Any recommendations for an iPad stand?
Pretty good present haul this year. iPad, skateboard, booze, some Lush body spray, French fries and a cold brew coffee maker.
Parents got me a cake. Sponge with dried pineapple, rosemary, mint, seaweed and meat floss.
While I appreciate the sentiment, the cake was not my cup of tea. My Chinese colleagues liked it though!
Not going to the gym because I’m skateboarding with Elise.

each haircut
each set of outgrown clothes
each start of a new school year
moves us closer to that thing we dread
our kids growing up
our kids leaving
this is not to depress you
it’s to help you enjoy now
while it’s here
while they are
the past is past
put our mistakes behind us
stop being distracted or too busy
rededicate ourselves — to parenting
our most important job
let us begin afresh, afresh, afresh
for
today is the very last time
they will be this age
again
Paraphrased from Daily Dad
This post about being a father and a teacher is basically me. Strange to read something that so perfectly describes your own life. Describes the struggles I feel I have trying to be a good father and teacher while not giving myself enough time.
