Day 4, finally got around to 5 hours after getting up. Aiming for consistency across all the rounds. I’m still working out my pacing though. Probably could have gone faster. If nothing else my rowing form just feels stronger. So doing something makes you better at it! WHO KNEW?!
“In this clip from a 2019 panel on “Self Esteem in the Age of Social Media,” comedian Bo Burnham explains how social media companies are out to colonize “every second of your life”:”
Todays anaerobic training. 5 rounds of 1min max effort and then 5 minutes rest. My Apple Watch counted it as 30minutes of exercise. First interval Elise and I discussed iPad usage which was fun too.
The gym is closed. Which is a source of frustration because it’s an important part of my mental health routine.
But…
Getting home earlier is so nice.
Urgh.
This set of Experts rating emojis is why I do love the internet, sometimes.
A common issue in China is our multi-letter names versus Chinese names of 2 or 3 characters. So it is with my driving license, which has to have a Chinese name. And that is how, the cute nickname my wife gave me is in the system. Always gets a laugh when people learn it!
Finally dragged myself out of bed at 5:30 to row. Today was an endurance piece. It was a struggle… To go slow. Worried about the noise the erg makes on the balcony. Out for a friends birthday tonight, looking forward to a feast!
So, the gym I use is closed for renovations.
Which is horrible because working out is so important to me.
And yet, being able to come an hour early is lovely because I can have some more time.
And that’s the issue.
I forever feel like I don’t have enough time to be the husband, father, teacher I want to be.

3x 1km rows. A little faster than last time. A chance to get out of my head for a little while.
When the thing you need to do is the last thing you feel like doing. In this case, that thing is sleep.

Opened the fridge to this surprise! #dayinthelife
With both Hong Kong and Taiwan getting rid of restrictions and welcoming back tourists, mainland China remains one of the few places in the world keeping borders closed and sticking to a “zero-Covid” strategy.
As a teacher, something we talk about to parents about is making Maths real. At our age range that’s normally just saying that counting things you see out and about is good. How many dogs? How many trees? And so on.
It also means that when Yumo goes to the toilet he tells me how many poos he has done.
“Daddy, I done 3 poos!” 💩
Remembering that it’s worth working on your health before you have to work on your health
Had a go at rucking today. 2 miles in the rain with my 20kg dumbbell in my North Face Duffell. Not the most comfortable but not too bad.
Am thinking that doing that before work is more doable than trying to exercise on the balcony.
When the Netflix-produced Korean show Squid Game went viral and won awards worldwide, many Chinese netizens were asking on social media — when can a Chinese TV show be recognized in that way?
Even though China has been trying to boost its cultural soft power for years, it’s unlikely that the dream of making a worldwide popular show will come true any time soon. To appeal to a global audience, the government would first need to be more tolerant of the kind of material it removes from TV-14 sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory.
Have had a similar conversation with Lyra about this.
I was considering getting an old iPod recently but for different reasons. I just wanted to disconnect from the data.

Eating sweet foods so the kids don’t. If I eat the rest of the biscuits they can’t! Just thinking of them…
Eating their food so it’s not wasted.

I don’t really listen to podcasts, I never feel I have the time but I enjoyed this discussion on hunting and eating meat, being too comfortable, boredom, doing hard things, screen time and rucking a whole lot.
Currently re-reading Vicious Circle by Mike Carey. Am still feeling, just generally overwhelmed with work and homelife and the backend of being ill. Rereading something is about all I can do.📚
Played some Lego Jurassic World on the Switch with the kids today, that was a whole lot of fun mostly. I just need to relax a little…
